ACES: Being Trauma Responsive is Key
Limited Capacity filling up

ACEs (adverse childhood experiences) are the definition of childhood trauma.    How do we work with students who may have or are continuing to live in a system of trauma?   What can we do to best support these, and all, students.   Through the presentation we will define and explore ACEs and how the trauma our students may be experiencing can impede their ability to learn and make appropriate judgements.  We will discuss together how schools can become more trauma responsive to the needs of the students daily.   We will explore how connection is key to success with all students, regardless where they come from or what they experience.    We will also reflect on how we can take care of ourselves and limit how much of their trauma we absorb, and learn how to support without taking on the students’ needs as our own.

Overcoming Perfectionism
Limited Capacity seats available

We all have seen it: The students who hold themselves to such high standards that they end up shutting down. Unhealthy perfectionism is linked to anxiety, depression, low grades, and overall low self esteem. In this research-based session, I will provide a perfectionism assessment that students can take to evaluate the core issue, and then I provide resources and tips to help both teachers and parents help their student overcome the issue.

Understanding the Brain and Emotions to Improve Math Instruction
Limited Capacity seats available

Who's got time to teach the SELs? We'll show you how to integrate content and social-emotional learning standards! In our workshop, we'll begin by discussing how the brain learns. With this foundation in place, we'll explore where math, reading, critical thinking, and emotions all come together in your classroom- especially in math! Understand the importance of creating a dialogue around emotions, which will allow teachers and students to process, understand, and reflect upon emotions and connect on an emotional level. We'll work to develop practical and adaptable strategies for integrating Social/Emotional Learning Standards into all mathematics instruction and to understand how to apply these strategies effectively in the classrooms.

Learner Qualities: Empowering Students to Develop Their Capacity to Learn
Limited Capacity seats available

In this session, the panel will share our school’s journey in teaching students seven learner qualities that build learning capacity.  Our school’s goal is to have students in the pit, a place where they struggle with and question new concepts. We ask our students to use learner qualities to find their way out of the pit. This panel discussion will focus on which learner qualities we teach and why, how we teach and integrate learner qualities, and how it has changed the culture of our school community.

Exploring Identity as a Means for Culturally Responsive Teaching
Limited Capacity seats available

This interactive session will include activities that teachers can bring back and use with their students and/or staff. We will explore our own identities and reflect on our own implicit bias. During this session, participants will learn about affinity bias and discuss how affinity bias can impact our schools. We discuss the power of “true communication” and “deep listening”. Participants will take away ideas on how to implement global awareness and culturally responsive teaching in a primary classroom. Finally, we will discuss how culturally responsive teaching can actually impact brain function and the students’ ability to learn new information.
